Variety Is The Spice Of Life
with Christine Moritz
Since making her club debut at the Buzz event at Nation in 2001, Christine Moritz has been intriguing Washington, D.C. clubgoers with her sound, which ranges from haunting, cinematic downtempo to upbeat, funk-influenced tunes.
Her November 2002 opening set for Thievery Corporation at the 9:30 Club caught the ear of Thievery's Eric Hilton, leading to a highly-coveted yearlong residency at the Eighteenth Street Lounge. She has also held residencies at Bossa, Gazuza, the outdoor summer event Air (at the invitation of 2003 DMC champion DJ Enferno), IndeBleu, and Alero. Christine has played with such artists as UNKLE, Jazzanova, Zero 7, Gotan Project, and Groove Armada, and has graced the decks in London, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Baltimore as well as at numerous D.C.-area venues.
Also a seasoned radio DJ, Christine is the host of the acclaimed weekly show "Variety Is the Spice of Life." From 1998 to 2006, the show aired on the University of Maryland's WMUC 88.1 FM, becoming the station's most-downloaded program. In January 2006, the show moved to a weekly online version hosted on the Variety Is The Spice Of Life website, where its strong, diverse selection and informed commentary continue to draw new listeners.
Christine has been featured in such publications as the Washington Post and the Washington City Paper (see the press section of Christine's website), and was nominated for a Wammie (Washington Area Music Association Award) in the Electronica DJ category in 2003 and 2005.
A talented music journalist, Christine has written for the San Diego-based downtempo magazine RE:UP, the Ubiquity Records website, and the now-defunct D.C.-based dance music magazine Innerloop. For selected articles, click here.
