The order of songs on this EP depends on where you look, but in our case this EP kicks off with "(Don't) Watch Them Die", which grabs an afrobeat vibe and adds an even funkier bass line than expected as the dual guitar work would make the JBs proud. An unexpected turn into a Middle-Eastern chant gives the song a breather before slamming back into the horn-led chorus.
Track Listing:
- (Don't) Watch Them Die
- What We Came For
- Ourselves
- Stuffs His Pockets
- What We Came For (DJ Smash Remix)
"Ourselves" is a funky gem that feels like party music from 1974, complete with funky horns and hand-claps. Hints of War and Stevie Wonder lend a familiarity to the song without being a detriment, as heard through Latin percussion and grooving bass lines. With lyrics that comment on social issues, the chorus line calls out for all people to "get ourselves together."
"Stuffs His Pockets" is another horn-driven funk tune lead by a bouncing clavinet rhythm. It's fun and has a great summer "drive your car around with the top down" vibe. The house beat keeps the song moving all the way to the end of the track.
"What We Came For" fits into the revival funk sound a la Dap Kings or Ocote Soul Sounds. There is a nice extended sax solo on top of chunky guitar and more percussion-led rhythm. The horn melody is really well written and never wears out its welcome as it weaves in and out at the right moments.
"What We Came For (DJ Smash Remix)" flips the song into a dub heavy reflective mood. It's a treat to hear someone turn funk vocals into a dub mood with nothing more than a bit of reverb. The remix really works as a song in its own right and doesn't need the listener to have the original as a reference. The driving kick keeps the momentum and the sub bass hits are just right.
