Coming off the album Less is More, "Soon" presents a perfection of the sound experienced on the classic Nightmares On Wax album Carboot Soul. It rolls along at boulevard cruising speed on tires of feather with gleaming rims of honey, with the rich, sweet vocals of Ella May behind the wheel. You really just need to lean back and enjoy the ride. But that's the album version. So what about the remixes?

Kicking off the remix action is work from Nightmares On Wax. If the original cruised along, this one picks up the pace a bit with an extra layer of beats and plunky synths. Its reggae skank rhythm really makes it impossible not to sway your whole upper body in time with its roll. The delicacy of the original is overshadowed by the heavier percussion, which at times feels too heavy-handed, but other times, it really makes your mind lock in. You choose your mood.

Given the two remixes found on this single, I have to say The Deadbeats really nail it. They manage to up the percussive strength while maintaining the delicate, feathery atmosphere that really draws you into the song. They preserve the importance of the harmony that's going on as each melody syncopates. It's like a slow rolling tide that's made all the more amazing by this new interpretation.

"Blame" is another album cut and I have to admit that on the album it hadn't jumped out at me. On this single however, it just floors me. Directly after hearing it on this single, I couldn't resist revisiting the whole album with a fresh perspective on what I was hearing.
