Though Germany's Le Pop Musik label can release some albums that are way too folk-pop for my enjoyment, I typically have a really hard time saying no to their sound. "Le Pop/Les Filles" is one of their latest and it features, as the title openly states, la creme of the label's female fronted French pop tunes. Kicking off with and incredible song by Barbara Carlotti called "Mademoiselle Opposum", it picks up with one of the most memorable tunes off Fredda's last album, "Barry White" and from there, it rarely stumbles.
Track Listing:
Barbara Carlotti "Mademoiselle Opossum"
Fredda "Barry White"
Coralie Clément "So long babylone"
Constance Amiot "Clash dans le tempo"
Julie B. Bonnie "Bonjour Monsieur"
Maud Lübeck "La parapluie"
Poney Express "Paris de loin"
Marianne Dissard "Les draps sourds"
Marianne Feder "Toi mon indien"
Doris Park "Je ne te quitterai jamais"
Melanie Pain "Celle de mes 20 ans"
Françoiz Breut "2013"
Austine "Cupide et stupide"
C++ "Les hasards"
Loane "Petit bonheur"
Jeanne Cherhal "Si tu reviens j'annule tout"
One of my favorites on here is "So long babylone" by Coralie Clément. It has a sweet, island rhythm to it that when combined with Coralie's sugary, nearly spoken-styled chansons melody makes it completely irresistible. Maud Lübeck's "Le parapluie" is incredible for its pillowy melancholy. Each song rolls effortlessly into another, and though similar in tone and intonation, each one has a very independent personality.
If songs could be feathers this might be how it would happen. This compilation qualifies for the "so nice. play it twice or thrice" award. And that's exactly what I'm going to do right now in order to start my day.
