Born Dead With Life is Perfect's first collection of songs written as an album. His previous album Giddimani was built from a collection of previously released singles. As a concept album, the lyrical theme that pervades is one of black history, with a strong focus on its history of slavery.

The importance Perfect has placed on the collective lyrical content of his songs overshadows everything else. Depending on how you approach it, this is good or bad. If you see Perfect as a preacher speaking from the pulpit, it's good. If you're looking to him to deliver songs that leave you repeatedly reaching for a replay, then it isn't so good.

Though you'll find titles like "Catch a Fire", the flame here burns slowly. It's more like a pot full of embers. You won't find the upfront rhythms of songs like "Amerimaka" or "Handcart Bwoy". To lock into the groove on this album, be prepared to let it unfold at its own rate.
