DJ Chicken George (aka Jeff Henry) has been tearing it up in the Austin, Texas music scene for more than a minute now. He just came off a multi-state US DJ tour in '06, released his debut compilation EP on Sweden's Swedish Brandy called The Swed.u.s.h. Connection, and now he's back with volume 2. CG tapped into the mid-tempo soulful, funk and breakbeat vibe that's going strong in the electronic music scene and scrambled up a 4-track plate with work from J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science, Illvibe Collective, Adrian Quesada, and Nicknack.
Track Listing:
J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science "Suga Deadly"
Illvibe Collective "What They Say (remix)(feat. Lady Alma)"
Adrian Quesada "OverThrowed! (feat. Martin Perna & DJ Chicken George)"
NickNack "Do You Believe Me?"
J-Boogie's cut called "Suga Deadly" taps some disco groove and pours it over relaxed mid-tempo beats backed by a variety of sweet percussive and vocal accents. Illvibe Collective's track "What They Say (remix)" has a broken beat soul with funky afro-soul heart and features the vocal syrup of Lady Alma.
On the Adrian Quesada number, entitled "OverThrowed!", you'll find him collaborating not only with Martin Perna (founder of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra), but DJ Chicken George as well. The sound throws back to some early soul with dusty horns, funky quitar licks, flute and some nice Afro-Latin inspired percussiuon. The addition of some deep sax notes and strongly grooving bass line round it out nicely.
The last track comes from Nicknack and it's called "Do You Believe Me?". Continuing the old school funk vibe, it pushes out some classic sounding breakbeats and gritty soul vocal accents.
In a word: connected. The Swed.u.s.h Connection 2 is short and sweet, but these 4 tracks are solid; like a hard-boiled egg, though you couldn't beat the flavor even if you deviled it.
