Bombay Dub Orchestra Remixed EP

Bombay Dub Orchestra Remixed EP After making a strong impression with their self-titled debut album, Bombay Dub Orchestra have returned with remix EP whose digital-only release took it quickly to the #1 spot on the UK, Canadian, and French iTunes world charts, and had it hold strong to #2 in the US, and #4 in Japan. It includes remixes by Thievery Corporation, Banco de Gaia, Spider, DJ Drez Jahta, and Pathaan, who all push the heavily Indian influenced, orchestral and dubbed out tones to new places.
Track Listing:
  1. Feel (Thievery Corporation remix)
  2. Beauty & The East (Banco de Gaia remix)
  3. To The Shore (Spider remix)
  4. Mumtaz (DJ Drez Jahta mix)
  5. To The Shore (Pathaan's ray of sunshine remix)

Thievery Corpration work with "Feel" and after minimal changes to the intro, drop their trademark beats and bass into the mix, instantly turning it into an undeniably Thievery number. The rhythms unfold slowly and are highlighted nicely by subtle, bright moments within the percussion and sitar work that climax with thick dub echoes.

Banco de Gaia insert deep, pulsing beats into "Beauty And The East", and give it a slow, echoing build that cuts up the strong female vocals of the original into something almost unrecognizable as human voice. This one definitely positions its sound as downtempo-epic.

Spider throws some old school trance beats behind "To The Shore", whose persistent 4/4 bass kick and snare give way from time-to-time to a tranquil bed of strings and flute. This one definitely goes out to all the house heads and necessarily strips out the majority of feeling that was a focal point of the original version.

I became aware of DJ Drez Jahta when I heard his full-length album Jahta Beat. It's an impressive piece of work you should check out. His mix of "Mumtaz" is likewise impressive and well worth getting hold of. It incorporates a little flute you may recognize from Nitin Sawhney's work and pairs it up with some incredibly mellow and amazingly rhythmix beats. Showing his DJ side, Drez throws down a little scratch action, and follow it up with vocal drums and the strong female vocals from the original. It's a complex arrangement of sounds but he handled it nicely.

Pathaan gives us the last track, and it's his slightly drum n' bass spin on "To The Shore". Don't think of the typically overbearing walls of percussion that give drum n' bass its personality, these beats are about as mellow as you can imagine. Combined with the equally mellow flute work, sweeping strings and heavy-but-airy keys, this track is certain to earn its place as a classic piece of SOuth Asian downtempo.
