With this digital only release, Shrift present a different side to their sound. They've handed four of the songs off Lost In A Moment over to group of four artists; Outrun (actually Dennis Wheatley of Shrift with Stefan), Da Lata, the Darko, and The Real Tuesday Weld. What came back are five very different interpretations in styles from Chicago house and broken beat, to abstract ambient jazz and Latin down tempo.
Track Listing:
To The Floor (Outrun mix)
As Far As I Can See (Da Lata remix)
Lost In A Moment (Strange Worlds mix)
Yes I Love You (The Real Tuesday Weld's wee small hours mix)
To The Floor (Outrun dub)
Outrun's Chicago house styled treatment of "To The Floor" (also presented as the "Outrun dub") is more synthpoppy than bold and bassy. It takes the major string stabs and rhythmic elements and wraps them in 80s-styled synth keys and re-composes the vocal parts into largely vocal melodies with a minimum of actual lyrics.
Da Lata as you can imagine are responsible for the Latin treatment, turning "As Far As I Can See" into a low-key groover with a nice samba rhythm and a subtle synth edge accented by looped acoustic guitar phrases. The Darko deliver the most surprising mix here by turning "Lost In A Moment" from a sweet, ambient floater into a deep and dirty broken beat cut. The Real Tuesday Weld's ambient jazz treatment of "Yes I Love You" is truly a beautiful thing to listen to, so just sit back and let it wrap around you. It's most in keeping with Shrift's original sound, so this one is definitely recommended for Shrift devotees.
