Produced by Lo Fi Allstars with support from Russ Porter (Quantic Soul Orchestra/Limp Twins) on vocals, "State Of You" is the first single released off Hardkandy's highly anticipated album "Last To Leave" and it must be said, their Kung Fu is strong and funky.
Track Listing:
State Of You (radio edit)
State Of You (original instrumental)
State Of You (Simian Mobile Disco mix)
Compared to their debut album "How Do You Do Nothing" (2003), a masterpiece of Rhodes organ, orchestral strings, mellow breaks and soulful moods, Hardkandy have opted for a driving, but still laid-back, future funk vibe.
The lyrics tell the story of a modern man, in decline, wasted and too old for the scene he's in, as he parties 7-days-a-week. The music is an organic mix of deep bass lines, funky organ, jazzy flute, and mid-tempo beats led by the vocal stylings of Russ Porter. The result is gauranteed to put a nod in your head and shuffle in your feet. If vocal tracks aren't your thing, just slide on over to the instrumental.
Simian Mobile Disco drop a nice minimalized remix featuring jerky, glitchy beats and squelchy synths along with cut-up and effected vocals that's said to be "stirring up heat with the mullets". And how could it possibly leave them cold?
Last To Leave isn't due out until Spring of 2006, so do yourself (and your musical soul) a favor and don't wait that long. This is good stuff, really good stuff.
