"Pop" has one of the most infectious choruses of all the songs on Cay Taylan's full-length "Su", and of course, that's by design... "after a few seconds the song comes with the chorus, verse one, chorus again, verse two, bridge, chorus and the final." ...it's "Pop". While it's true that of every track on Su, "Pop" is the only one I could ever imagine commercial radio giving consideration, this isn't a pop song at all... it's too good. This 12" vinyl single offers 3 striking mixes of "Pop", two by way of Stuttgarts finest, Dublex Inc., and one by Vienna's Señor Buzz.
Track Listing:
Pop (Dublex Inc. yllegal mix)
Pop (Señor Buzz "please, mash up the floor" d.d.dub)
Pop (Dublex Inc. legal mix)
Pop
The a-side opens with a solo piano and a Tango flourish of castañeta-like clicks is Dublex Inc.'s "Yllegal mix". This mix carries a dancefloor-ready, b-boy style and mid-tempo, 2-step bass kicks under Kemon's island-style hip-hop vocals. After that comes Señor Buzz's "Please mash up the floor d.d.dub" mix, in a mash of Middle Eastern percussion, and deep, winding bass lines, under Kemon's nicely delivered rap. The groove switches up halfway through, getting more and more urgent as the song progresses, then reverts to its original mid-tempo energy and back again until it fades out.
The b-side holds Dublex Inc.'s most incredible mix of "Pop" called the "Legal mix". A smooth downtempo beat and laid-back, hip-hop style is coupled with a nice female vocal loop and a simple, bass groove. Uncomplicated and so delicious! The last track is the album version of "Pop" found on the full-length Su.
Really, really nice mixes! Cay Taylan, Dublex Inc. and Señor Buzz... thank you.
