Properly Chilled presents some Q&A with...
From The Mating Game to Dirty Laundry, it's All Bitter:Sweet
Q's by Properly Chilled
If you're in the United States you've likely heard their music already, it's everywhere. Bitter:Sweet have popped up in commercials and soundtracks from Bebe, Korbel, to The Devil Wears Prada. Microsoft included their work among the pre-loaded content on its new Zune portable media player, and you may have caught Callie doing a solo dance number in her pajamas on Grey's Anatomy, or then again maybe you caught them on Nip/Tuck, or Entourage? Like I said their music is everywhere. Kiran Shahani and Shana Halligan took time out for a quick chat with Properly Chilled and talked about everything from T.V. as the new radio to Dirty Laundry and they even give us a little dating advice. Enjoy!

PChill: So you met through an ad at Craigslist that Kiran had placed for a singer. Shana, what was it about that listing that caught your eye?
B:Sweet: Shana: There wasn't anything in particular, it was pretty much just an ad looking for a singer for an electronic project

PChill: How long did it take before you actually responded to it?
B:Sweet: Shana: I mean it was the first time I ever looked for ads in that way, and I was kind of all in a very strange state of mind anyway, so really, I responded pretty quickly after I saw it.

PChill: And Kiran what did you expect to get from that ad?
B:Sweet: Kiran: I don't know I mean, I've auditioned so many singers in my lifetime because I've worked on a couple different projects, so I was expecting it to be a long, drawn out process. I thought I'd have to go listen through a hundred girls, but she was like one of the first three that came, and she just hit it right away and there was this chemistry there, so that was such a surprise to me. A surprise to find her so quickly.

PChill: So Shana, you had actually stopped listening to music for a little while before this...what was the reason for that?
B:Sweet: Shana: I was just pretty disheartened I guess. I'd been doing this for a really long time, pouring my heart and soul out into the universe and into my music for so long that it became so much of a business. I wasn't enjoying the process anymore and I had trouble enjoying, even listening to some of my favorite music. Becuase it was just representing something that didn't seem meaningful to me anymore. So I kinda needed to check out completely.

PChill: So that break was a good thing for you?
B:Sweet: Shana: Completely. Yeah! I mean it needed to be done, clearly needed to be done. As soon as I started writing again, it was like, I realized what was missing in my life. It was this void, and I became really fulfilled again. This time I made music I loved and it was completely pure and not for anyone else and not for the industry, and just for Kiran and I. We agreed to do something we absolutely loved, and were going to put out no matter what. And it was, you know, it just was the reason I got into it again.

PChill: And Kiran for you; changing from working with Supreme Beings of Leisure before, how is the experience now with just the two of you writing. Do you find things come together faster?
B:Sweet: Kiran: Well there are fewer opinions I have to worry about, and it's really nice just writing with her because we really see things the same way, and there are not that many arguments when we're actually writing music, because we definitely have the same taste. It was a bit of a struggle sometimes before because, you know with four opinions, and having to take everything into consideration. At first I was little insecure about doing it but she's been amazing, and you know, it's been a perfect team up on that side.

PChill: So you've been showing up in a lot of places on screen; T.V and different places like that. As much as even 7 or 10 years ago that would have been unheard of for a band in your position, being a little more "underground", what do you think about the change there seems to be in attitude, now that T.V. and things are the way a new band gets started (recognized)? Is that something strange to you still at this point, or...?
B:Sweet: Kiran: No, it's kind of refreshing because it's so hard getting on commercial radio now, there's so much cookie-cutter stuff, that it's a great avenue for us to get our stuff heard. People are acutally looking for it, because they're tired of whatever they're getting on commercial radio, so...

Shana: Yeah. Also I think, people really connect with music in visuals, you know? They can really remember a song when they think about that scene they saw it in. I've discovered a lot of music that way, when it's a really touching scene and a beautiful song plays in the movie. It's really nice to put the two together because it kind of solidifies it, you know, in peoples brains a little bit more I think.

PChill: So you think T.V. is just sort of naturally picking up where radio is failing?
B:Sweet: Shana: Definitely.

Kiran: yeah, that and the Internet too.

Shana: Yeah, and it's harder and harder I think for bands to get on commercial radio. Because there are shorter and smaller playlist (laughs). So, I think T.V. is a beautiful outlet for everybody right now.

PChill: So especially "The Mating Game"...that specific song off your album seems to be showing up in more places than any other of your songs. Is that the one you would have expected people to pick up on, or at least to really gain an introduction to your sound?
B:Sweet: Kiran: We think "Dirty Laundry" is the one that will take off the most actually.

Shana: (laughs) Yeah honestly, that's the one that's gonna bust out!

PChill: Yeah, you think that one's gonna take it over?
B:Sweet: Kiran: Yeah.

Shana: We think so. We had a funny little feeling when we wrote it, it was like uh-oh! We could be dead wrong, but... (laughs)

Kiran: It's actually getting a lot of attention now too, and [we] just did a video for it. It's coming along.

PChill: So, seeing that you are, and I'd read this I think in the Zune interview that you did, the parents of your songs you don't like to pick favorites among them, now is the time I've gotta ask about your influences (indulgences), and I think you got a little prep on this one. You're going to have to pick some favorites from them. So, what is your favorite Wham song?
B:Sweet: Shana: (laughs) Wham?

Kiran: Mine would have to be "Bad Boys"

Shana: (still laughing) I love that Wham is in the mix.

Kiran: Remember, we put that in that interview?

Shana: We did? Oh shi... ohhh!

Kiran: Remember that guilty pleasure question?

Shana: (laughs) That was a guilty pleasure, those aren't my influences! ...oh (gives in to the question)... "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go".

PChill: I know there was Journey on that list. What song would you pick if you had to? If there was just one?
B:Sweet: Kiran: Ohh...God..."Don't Stop Believing"

Shana: (laughs) I wouldn't call these exactly influences on our...sound...

Kiran: (states with a grin) But we love 'em (laughs)

PChill: You just did a show in L.A. where you played alongside Natalie Walker...how'd that go?
B:Sweet: Shana: That was fantastic! It was actually one our most favorite shows I think we've ever played. It was really good, the audience was just so warm and so welcoming, and everybody there was having such a good time. We were having a ball up there! It was a great show.

PChill: So what were the highlights from that? Anything that just like...
B:Sweet: Kiran: It was so nice to see our fans there, and you know, singing along with the words. It was just nice.

Shana: Yeah, and they're not afraid to have fun and dance, and you know? Especially in L.A. you go to check out these bands in L.A. and everybody's too cool for school and they're all looking around to see if anybody's looking at them and they're afraid to really let go and have fun, and we've noticed like, people really let go at our shows and it's really wonderful. It's awesome!

PChill: So you did an after-party (clearly) afterward...and which was more fun?
B:Sweet: Kiran: Definitely the show. (laughs)

PChill: One thing mentioned on your MySpace page was something about "Erotic City"...was that a song you actually played at the show?
B:Sweet: Shana: (laughs)

Kiran: We did. (laughs)

Shana: Wellll we didn't play the whole song, we played a little part of it...

Kiran: We mashed it up with one of our songs.

Shana: Yeah, just riled 'em up (laughs)

PChill: Okay, along the lines of your favorite songs...it's a bit of the Pulp quiz thing going on; The Odd Couple or The Dating Game?
B:Sweet: Shana: Wow. We are definitely The Odd Couple.

Kiran: (laughs)

Shana: And who you picked is definitely suited for The Dating Game (laughs)

PChill: On that note, online or speed dating?
B:Sweet: Kiran & Shana: (in unison) ohh...online

PChill: So you're working on your next album already. How's that coming along?
B:Sweet: Shana: Slowly (laughs) no...

Kiran: It's kinda hard, we're a lot busier this time around. The first time we just got to write. This time we have so much business; interviews, live shows. We're always on the go.

Shana: we're promoting our record so, it's harder to have the same amount of time as you had before but...

Kiran: But it's coming along. We're actually excited about it, we've got some great things going.

Shana: Oh yeah, we have some songs we're really fired up about so...

PChill: Any plans on exactly when you might put out a single from that new stuff? Is that just going to be next year some time?
B:Sweet: Shana: Well yeah, definitely early next year. Probably Spring or Summer, maybe just a single. We're hoping to release it by the Fall I think of next year...the whole album. But, who knows what could happen before then.

PChill: For the rest of this year then, what are your plans, what have you got going on?
B:Sweet: Shana: We're doing a lot of writing actually, because, now that the holidays are here, we can actually get ourselves into the studio when everybody else is busy eating and visiting people. (laughs)

Kiran: So yeah, we are going to take some time and write.

Shana: We're supposed to play at a kind of World music festival in San Diego called The Dragon Ball (Dec. 31, 2006), and next year will hopefully be a big year for us to travel around and tour...

Kiran: Yeah, early January/February we hope to be on the East coast.

PChill: So to wrap the whole thing up (in keeping with The Mating Game theme), and you can really answer with anything you like...do you have any dating advice to share?
B:Sweet: Kiran: Mine would be for the guyShana: Don't quote Morrissey on the first date.

Shana: And ah ladies, just, well this goes for everyone: Just be completely who you are at all times. Don't worry about waiting all those days to call or, if he should call first, or who should make the first move. I think, you know, everybody's equal and you should just feel exactly what it is that you're feeling and be exactly who you are and if they don't accept it, then, they're not for you.
